Abdurrahman Wahid (1940–2009) served as the first democratically elected President of Indonesia between 1999 and 2001. Advocate of a liberal, reforming Islam, he was throughout his career a champion of peace and interfaith dialogue, calling for people of all religions to work together against hatred and extremism.
