Grew up in a small mining village in Yorkshire, England, that he remembers as predominantly gray. “There wasn’t any color,” he says. “It was all up to my imagination.” In the years since, he has created more than 30 picture books, including A Christmas Story. He is the winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, Britain’s highest honor for a picture book. He lives in southern France.
