Sadovnichy-Ikeda dialogue published in Japanese
TOKYO, Japan: Ushio Publishing Co. has released the Japanese hardcover edition of Asu no sekai, kyoiku no shimei--nijuisseiki no ningen o kosatsu suru (tentative translation: The Mission of Education in Tomorrow's World--Thoughts on Humanity in the Twenty-first Century), a dialogue between Moscow State University (MSU) Rector Dr. Victor A. Sadovnichy and Daisaku Ikeda. In this work, the authors discuss the vital role of higher education in establishing the ethos of this century by promoting philosophical principles that uphold the sanctity of life. This book was compiled from discussions originally serialized in Ushio, a Japanese literary magazine, from June to November 2011.
Rector Sadovnichy and Mr. Ikeda have met on several occasions and previously published another dialogue on education that was released as two volumes in Japanese and as one book in Russian. After Rector Sadovnichy and Mr. Ikeda's last meeting in 2008, the two authors agreed to begin their latest dialogue through written correspondence.
MSU awarded Mr. Ikeda an honorary doctorate in 1975 and an honorary professorship in 2002. Rector Sadovnichy was among those who nominated Mr. Ikeda for the Order of Friendship that was conferred by the Russian Federation upon Mr. Ikeda in 2008.
Rector Sadovnichy was born in Krasnopavlovka, present day Ukraine, in 1939 and graduated from MSU as a mathematician. He presently serves as the Rector of MSU and vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
