Linus Pauling (1901–94) was an American chemist and peace activist. Known as a “father of modern chemistry,” he was the world’s only winner of two unshared Nobel Prizes (chemistry in 1954 and peace in 1962). He served as professor at the California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and other institutions.
