Dialogue on education between Gu Mingyuan and Daisaku Ikeda

BEIJING, China: Educational Science Publishing House (ESPH) has published a simplified Chinese edition of Heiwa no kakehashi--ningen kyoiku o kataru (tentative translation: "Humanistic Education--A Bridge to Peace"), a dialogue between Gu Mingyuan, honorary president of the Chinese Society of Education, and Daisaku Ikeda.

In their dialogue, the two authors share their insights on a broad range of educational issues, from the pedagogical importance of caring and compassion to the relationship between one's local community and character formation. They also discuss their ideals and perspectives on fostering global citizens and education as a lifelong learning process.

In the conclusion of their dialogue, Dr. Gu expresses his hope that the young people of China and Japan would "develop into envoys of bilateral peace and goodwill" and that they serve to draw the two countries even closer in the future, an undertaking that both Dr. Gu and Mr. Ikeda have consistently striven towards.

The dialogue was initially serialized in The Journal of Oriental Studies, the Japanese edition of the annual Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) periodical, from 2009 to 2012. The Japanese edition of their discussions was compiled and published as a book in October 2012 by the Tokyo-based IOP, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between China and Japan.
