On October 21, 2007, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda and his wife Kaneko Ikeda met with a delegation from the All-China Youth Federation (ACYF) at the Soka University (SU) campus in Hachioji, Tokyo. The delegation was visiting Japan at the invitation of the Soka Gakkai youth division as part of an annual cultural and educational exchange, a tradition initiated between the Chinese and Japanese youth during Mr. Ikeda's sixth visit to China in 1984 and signed into agreement in 1985. Since then, each year the Soka Gakkai and ACYF youth have alternately visited China and Japan.

The meeting between Mr. Ikeda and the ACYF delegates took place at the central auditorium on the SU campus prior to a conferral ceremony for an honorary professorship Mr. Ikeda received from the China Youth University for Political Sciences (CYUPS). [ Go to story.]

Delegation leader Xi Jieying thanked Mr. Ikeda for his contributions to strengthening friendship between Japan and China and expressed his personal resolve to succeed the spirit of his predecessors whose arduous efforts helped realize the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations. In response, Mr. Ikeda thanked the delegates for traveling the long distance to Japan for the sake of Sino-Japanese friendship and stressed that forging friendship is a righteous path, equivalent to promoting justice and happiness.

Earlier the same day, the ACYF members viewed cherry trees Mr. Ikeda had dedicated to Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and his wife, Deng Yingchao, in December 1974 and April 1979, respectively, on the Soka University grounds. The delegation was warmly greeted and joined by SU students.

The ACYF is the largest youth organization in China. Chinese President Hu Jingtao led the first youth exchange group from China to visit the Soka Gakkai youth in Japan in 1985.
