Second Spanish Edition of Vitier–Ikeda Dialogue Published in Cuba
Spanish paperback edition of Vitier–Ikeda dialogue
HAVANA, Cuba: The Center for José Martí Studies (Centro de Estudios Martianos, CEM) has released a Spanish paperback edition of José Martí, Cuban Apostle (Diálogo sobre José Martí, el Apóstol de Cuba), a dialogue between CEM’s founding president Cintio Vitier and SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. The late Cintio Vitier (1921–2009), a celebrated Cuban poet and essayist, met Mr. Ikeda on two occasions, once in Havana and once in Tokyo.
The dialogue, in which the authors discuss the life of José Martí, a Cuban independence hero, was initially serialized in Ushio, a Japanese literary magazine, and published as a book in Japanese (Karibu no taiyo, seigi no uta) in August 2001. The Spanish edition was published in Cuba in October of the same year to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Martí’s birth and has been well received by the Cuban public since its release. Marking the 20th anniversary of Mr. Ikeda’s visit to Cuba in 1996, CEM released a second edition this year with a renewed cover design. An English edition of the dialogue is also available.
At the book release event, Dr. Carmen Suárez of CEM presented the new edition commenting, “The dialogue holds the key to unlocking the troubling chains of turmoil of the current times. I hope many people will read and learn from it.”
