On February 6, 2007, Dongju College in Busan, South Korea, conferred honorary professorships on both Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda and Mrs. Kaneko Ikeda. Dongju College President Jung Jong-sub and his wife Cho Hyun-min, who serves as Board of Trustees Chair, attended the conferral. Soka University President Masami Wakae and Soka Women's College President Katsuhiko Fukushima received the diplomas on behalf of the Ikedas. The citation for Mr. Ikeda states that he has fostered capable people who will shoulder responsibility for the new millennium based on the ideals of true humanism, while that for Mrs. Ikeda pays tribute to her efforts to inspire and encourage women around the world, while working in partnership with her husband.
Dongju Women's Vocational School was founded in 1978 and became Dongju College in 1998. The college comprises five faculties in health and social welfare; hotel and tourism management; early childhood education; and design and information technology, with a focus on digital media. It also has an active foreign exchange program with students traveling abroad to study English, Chinese and Japanese.
Dr. Jung became an elementary school teacher at 19 and began studying law while teaching. He eventually served as a public prosecutor and experienced first-hand the limitations of the legal system for overseeing and governing society. He returned to teaching with renewed appreciation for education as the primary path for fostering people and developing society. Based on this conviction, he founded Dongju College.
During the conferral Dr. Jung expressed his respect for Mr. and Mrs. Ikeda's commitment to education and their efforts to promote friendly relations between Korea and Japan.
